Mu Cang Chai is famous for the stretch of hazardous roads spreading out for tens kilometers of infinite and primeval landscapes, grandiose ranges of mountains and the peaceful and poetic picture of ethnics’ houses covered by terrace fields. Mu Cang Chai is located 180 kilometers away from Yen Bai city.

Getting direct to Mu Cang Chai from Hanoi, you can take local bus, private car or motorbike.

1. Motorbike
If you are a backpacker, motorbike is a good option. There is a National Highway No.32 linking Lao Cai and National Highway No.37 connecting to Tuyen Quang. Yen Bai is a transit point for tourists going to Mu Cang Chai.

2. Public bus from Hanoi to Yen Bai
Distance Hanoi – Mu Cang Chai is 280km. The route condition is very bad so you have to take about 1 day to arrive by bus. It's better to check your arrival day. You can buy tickets at My Dinh station (if you will start from Hanoi) or Sapa Bus station.  Hai Van bus line is very good, clean vehicle and especially it's a famous brand among other bus services.

3. Train from Hanoi to Yen Bai city and take bus to Mu Cang Chai town
The trains usually depart at night (7:40PM, 8:35PM, 9:10PM, 9:50PM) and arrive in Yen Bai train station in the early morning (4 - 5 hours).

Hanoi station has two gates. The main gate located at 120 Le Duan street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi. This Gate is usually for South-bound train. And the Station B located at Tran Quy Cap street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi (usually for North train to Sapa, Yen Bai).
Train arrives Yen Bai in the early morning. It's advisable to wait until the late morning to walk around this area.

Bus from Yen Bai city to Mu Cang Chai Town
You should wake up early, around 4:30 AM as you need to have breakfast before getting on a local bus that departs at 5.30 AM to Mu Cang Chai Town.

Note: The bus will not stop for breakfast. Buses will pass and non stops.
